What is a Distributed Social Network?
"Distributed Social Network" is a term coined in 2007 by Mike Dever, YouChoose's co-founder. It defines any social network that connects people across multiple websites and devices. It can be contrasted with "Destination" social networks such as facebook and myspace, which are destinations people 'go to' to interact. Distributed Social Networks allow people to interact with each other from multiple locations. Destination websites and their participants utilizes widgets, applications or other technology to facilitate the distribution of content across the resultant Distributed Social Network.
How We're Building the YouChoose Distributed Social Network
YouChoose has developed technology (patent-pending) that enables social network members to add the YouChoose widget (also called an "application" or "App") to their web sites and social network personal pages that allow them to join with others to discuss and take action on issues. One use of this technology was demonstrated at the DEMO 08 conference in January 2008. You can see the demonstration here: http://press.youchoose.net.
To date more than 400,000 people have joined YouChoose and participated in more than 1,000 such actions ("campaigns") on the YouChoose Distributed Social Network. These members are hosting YouChoose widgets on facebook, myspace, bebo, blogger and other social networks and websites.
These campaigns have varied widely and include:
A successful shareholder action to remove Terry Semel as CEO of Yahoo.
Thousands of people joining in the search for missing adventurer Steve Fossett
Hundreds of thousands joining groups to save their favorite TV shows from being cancelled
